Bible and Church Fathers
Nowhere do we experience Christ more than in the Liturgy and in the Eucharist. Here we are inserted into the life of Heaven together with the angels and saints giving glory to God for his wondrous deeds.
But this experience we have in the Liturgy will never be intense unless we are familiar with the story—the wonderful story of the adventures between God and our forefathers.
Most of us have had the experience of coming to a deeper appreciation of Mom and Dad as we ourselves have become older. Something happens to us, for whatever reason we begin to become interested in them and in their history. We begin to ask them to recount the story of where they were born and the pranks they pulled at school. We begin to see the stories as our stories, and they become very real to us. We find ourselves becoming fascinated with every detail of the courtship and the big wedding and the like. And the more we learn, the more we grow in esteem, love, and affection for our parents. We even find ourselves wishing we would have taken an interest in them a whole lot earlier.
The Bible and the Church Fathers are like this. With God’s grace, one day we become interested in knowing the story. We begin to realize that this story is our story too. This story is of our forefathers and how they responded when our Father in Heaven directly intervened in their lives.
Here at ssjohn.org we try to provide you with a little bit of help in coming to know the story. We want to help you grow in esteem, love, and affection for the Eucharist in the Liturgy. We are convinced that as you become more familiar with the story, you will come to appreciate your Father in Heaven at a much more profound level.
