Mass Readings

Seventh Sunday of Easter
May 28, 2006

(Mass Readings from the New Calendar)

1st Reading (Acts 1:15–17, 20a, 20c–26)

A reading from the Book of Acts

  1. In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred and twenty people) and said,

  2. ‘Brethren, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus—

  3. for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.’

  4. ‘For it is written in the book of Psalms, “Let another take his position of overseer.”

  5. So one of the men who have accompanied us throughout the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

  6. beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us–one of these men must become a witness with us to his resurrection.’

  7. So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.

  8. Then they prayed and said, ‘Lord, you know the hearts of all men. Show us which one of these two you have chosen

  9. to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.’

  10. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

Short Pause

Responsorial Psalm (Ps. 103:1–2, 11–12, 19–20)

R. Alleluia.
  1. Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

  2. Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and do not forget all his benefits.

R. Alleluia.
  1. For as the heavens are high above the earth,
    so great is his steadfast love towards those who fear him;

  2. as far as the east is from the west,
so far he removes our transgressions from us.

R. Alleluia.
  1. The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.

  2. Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding.

R. Alleluia.

2nd Reading—Epistle (1 Jn. 4:11–16)

A reading from the first letter of Saint John.

  1. Beloved,
if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

  2. No man has ever seen God;
if we love one another, God lives in us,
and his love is perfected in us.

  3. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us,
because he has given us of his Spirit.

  4. And we have seen and do testify
that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world.

  5. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God,
    and they abide in God.

  6. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us.
    God is love,
and those who abide in love abide in God,
    and God abides in them.

V. The Word of the Lord.

Gospel (Jn 17:11b–19)

V. The Lord be with you.
R. And also with you.
V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
R. Glory to you, O Lord.
  1. Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying:

  2. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me,
so that they may be one, as we are one.

  3. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me.
I guarded them, and not one of them was lost
except the one destined to be lost,
so that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  4. But now I am coming to you,
so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves.

  5. I have given them your word,
and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world,
just as I do not belong to the world.

  6. I am not asking you to take them out of the world,
but I ask you to protect them from the evil one.

  7. They do not belong to the world,
just as I do not belong to the world.

  8. Sanctify them in the truth;
    your word is truth.

  9. As you have sent me into the world,
so I have sent them into the world.

  10. And for their sakes I sanctify myself,
so that they also may be sanctified in truth.
