1st Reading (Wis. 7:7–11)

A reading from the Book of Wisdom

  1. I prayed, and understanding was given me;
    I called on God, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.

  2. I preferred her to scepters and thrones,
    and I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with her.

  3. Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem,
    because all gold is but a little sand in her sight,
    and silver will be accounted as clay before her.

  4. I loved her more than health and beauty,
    and I chose to have her rather than light,
    because her radiance never ceases.

  5. All good things came to me along with her,
    and in her hands uncounted wealth.

V. The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm (Ps. 128:1–2, 3, 4–6)

R. Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
  1. Teach us to count our days
    that we may gain a wise heart.

  2. Turn, O Lord! How long?
    Have compassion on your servants!

R. Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
  1. Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
    so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

  2. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
    and for as many years as we have seen evil.

R. Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
  1. Let your work be manifest to your servants,
    and your glorious power to their children.

  2. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us,
    and prosper for us the work of our hands,
    O prosper the work of our hands!

R. Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!

2nd Reading–Epistle (Heb. 4:12–13)

A reading from the Book of Hebbrews

  1. Brethren:

  2. Indeed, the word of God is living and active,
    sharper than any two–edged sword,
    piercing until it divides soul from spirit,
    joints from marrow;
    it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  3. And before him no creature is hidden,
    but all are naked and laid bare
    to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account.

V. The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

Gospel (Mk. 10:17–30)

V. The Lord be with you.
R. And also with you.
V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark.
R. Glory to you, O Lord.
  1. As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him,
    ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’

  2. Jesus said to him,
    ‘Why do you call me good?
    No one is good but God alone.

  3. You know the commandments:
    “You shall not murder;
    You shall not commit adultery;
    You shall not steal;
    You shall not bear false witness;
    You shall not defraud;
    Honor your father and mother.”

  4. He said to him,
    ‘Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.’

  5. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said,
    ‘You lack one thing;
    go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor,
    and you will have treasure in heaven;
    then come, follow me.’

  6. When he heard this, he was shocked When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

  7. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,
    ‘How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’

  8. And the disciples were perplexed at these words.
    But Jesus said to them again,
    ‘Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

  9. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’

  10. They were greatly astounded and said to one another,
    ‘Then who can be saved?’

  11. Jesus looked at them and said,
    ‘With men it is impossible, but not with God;
    for with God all things are possible.’

  12. Peter began to say to him,
    ‘Look, we have left everything and followed you.’

  13. Jesus said,
    ‘Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news,

  14. who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.
